Why I Chose Plastering
I didn’t always know I wanted to be a plasterer. After school, I went to university to study music, which I loved. But after two years, I realised there wasn’t much opportunity for me here in the UK. Maybe Nashville would have been a better fit for the type of music that I like, but that’s just not an option.
So, I left university and spent a few years working different jobs—kitchens, factories, warehouses—just trying to figure things out. After COVID, I got into building cabins, working with stud walls and cladding for garden rooms. That’s when I started thinking about getting a proper trade. And plastering just appealed to me more than anything else.
Starting at Leeds College of Building
The only real concern I had about coming to college was the cost of train tickets! Apart from that, I was ready to get started. My work schedule needed some adjusting, but my employers were really supportive and encouraged me to do the course.
Now, I work Thursdays and Fridays so I can attend college. It’s been a good balance, and I’m grateful that my work was flexible and backed me in my decision.

A Supportive and Relaxed Environment
Leeds College of Building has been brilliant. The atmosphere is really laid back, which makes learning so much easier. Everyone’s friendly, and the tutors are highly knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. It’s a great place to be, and you can tell the teachers really know their stuff.
Learning plastering has been the most rewarding part for me. Being able to gain hands-on experience in such a relaxed environment is fantastic. The practical nature of the course suits me perfectly, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.
Advice for Anyone Thinking About Learning a Trade
If you’re considering getting into a trade, I can’t recommend Leeds College of Building enough. They’ve got the best tutors and everyone is very supportive. The key is to just go for it—whether you’re 18 or 80, you’re never too old to learn something new.
Having a trade behind you is invaluable. It opens doors and gives you options that you might not have otherwise. I’d say, if you’re thinking about it, just do it.
Looking Forward
For me, the dream would be to work in something plastering-related, ideally with British heritage or listed buildings. I love the idea of working on something so unique and historical. Maybe that’s the next step for me once I finish this course.
For now, though, I’m enjoying the journey. Learning a trade has been the best decision I’ve made, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.
